How to Relax and Be Confident
Public speaking can be fun! All it takes is a little relaxing and bit of confidence. The following public speaking tips can help you relax, be confident, and make a good speech into an incredible speech.
Relaxation
Following every public speaking tip in every public speaking book or course will not help you deliver a great speech… that is, unless you learn to relax. Relaxation is key to public speaking success.
Get rid of any thoughts about the perfection of your speech. Your speech is not perfect and never will be. No speech is flawless. Stop thinking your speech must change the world for eternity.
The best way to relax is to forget about your public speaking engagement and your speech. Do what you need to do to get ready and then forget about it. Write your speech, edit it, make changes, practice it, memorize it as well as you need to and then forget about it until it is time to speak.
Take some time before you speak to do something fun. Pick something you enjoy. If you are relaxed and in a good mood, you’re relaxed and happy spirit will carry over into your public speaking performance. Plan something to do after your speech as a reward.
Think about how you want to feel after your speech is over. Do you want to feel like you did not do your best because you were nervous and worried? Do you want to feel great because you went out there and gave it all you had despite being terrified?
Confidence
Be confident and do not show your fear. If you do not feel confident, pretend to be confident. Walk on stage with your head up and smile at your audience.
Smiles are powerful. When you smile at your audience, they will smile at you. All this smiling will drive up your confidence. Smiling provides positive energy in the room. It will make your audience confident in you as a speaker and you confident in delivering your speech.
Remember, your audience wants you to do a good job. They want to learn and be entertained or inspired by you.
Keep in mind that you are in charge. You are the expert, the speaker, and the audience is watching and reacting to you. Let the knowledge of your power at that moment take over, increasing your public speaking confidence and limiting your public speaking fear.
